Eastern Sierra Mountains

Linda Emerson, local ultrarunner and friend of Sage To Summit, put this great run together on the Volcanic Tablelands for everyone to enjoy when the mountains are full of snow. And this year the Sheepherder Loop is having a Superbloom! So pretty!

Distance: 20.4-mile loop

Total elevation gain: 2,260 feet

Volcanic Tablelands

Driving directions: From Bishop, take US Hwy 6 north for 1.4 miles, turn left on Five Bridges Road, then go another 2.4 miles to Fish Slough Road.  Turn right, and travel approx 6.5 miles to an information board on the east side of the road.  Park here.

Flowers

Time of year:  Fall, winter & spring. Water and shade are unavailable on this route, so plan accordingly.

Description:  The Sheepherder Loop is a clockwise loop.  When in doubt, turn right.  From the parking area, cross over to the west side of Fish Slough Road and begin running up a dirt road that heads west.  Follow this road for approximately 7.4 miles to a powerline road, and turn right.  Follow the powerline road for about 3.1 miles (10.5 mi elapsed) and turn right on a dirt road that heads downhill and toward the east.  Follow this road back to Fish Slough Road, which you will reach at about 19.2 miles elapsed.  Turn right one last time, and return to the information board/parking area.

Thanks, Linda for the great description and pictures!!
