Quick Overview:

A stable trail shoe with maximum cushioning and great traction for those long days on the trail.

* Required Fields

Cushioning so plush it almost feels like your feet are floating along the trail, this year’s model also features super tough vibram soles for increased durability. The Classic Altra Zero Drop platform and FootShape toe box combine to place your foot in a neutral position for a stable, natural running or backpacking experience in both uphill climbs and downhill descents. Providing plenty of traction and lighter than its predessor, the Olympus 2.0 is great for trail running, backpacking and even conquering those Class II and III peaks like Mt. Agassiz.

Overall Rating
Pros: zero drop, wide toe box, very cushioned, gaiter attachment, well ventilated
Cons: hard to lace perfectly

I wore this shoe after having tried on the Olympus 1.0 in the store (couldn't stand it's exaggerated rock so we never made it on the trail...) and having run in several Hoka models such as the Stinson Evo and the Kailua Trail. After a couple of months in the Olympus 2.0, I feel that this shoe has not only become my favorite high-volume shoe, but my preferred running shoe for all terrain.

Being an Altra, the Olympus 2.0 is of course a zero-drop shoe that has an unusually wide footbed; two qualities I appreciate but don't necessarily seek out. It has a low arch and feels very firm considering how much foam is under your foot. Unlike other high-volume running shoes I have tried, I never felt like I needed to alter my stride in order to accommodate for the Olympus' size, even during my first few runs transitioning from a semi-minimal trail shoe, the Brooks PureGrit. It behaves nimbly on steep or rocky terrain. Altra's experience in designing trail shoes shines in the Olympus with its built in gaiter attachment and durable outer mesh that is extremely breathable.

My only complaint about the Olympus 2.0 I how difficult I find it to lace up comfortably. I would describe my foot as being of average women's width and volume. So when I lace up the Olympus, I end up taking out a fair amount of slack in the show strings to compensate for the shoe's wide fit. This results in either tenderness on the bridge of my foot close to the end of the laces because I didn't take out slack evenly OR I took out too much slack in the whole system so my foot is tingling from being secured too tightly. Most runs with the Olympus I have to stop once in order to re-lace my shoe.
